About Lauren Henkin

Photographer Lauren Henkin grew up in the suburbs of Washington, DC. In 1996, after graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture from Washington University in St. Louis, she moved home to Maryland and began working as an architect. During the next 10 years, she worked as the public programs manager for the Corcoran Gallery of Art, book designer for Dumbarton Oaks, and creative director for an international leisure management firm. She has since shown her work internationally, and has recently published her first book, Displaced.

She states, “I strive to explain the essence of what is around us; an afghan drying on a line, a row of mailboxes on a gravel road, or remnants of an abandoned yard sale. What defines us? Is it the environment we surround ourselves in? Is it the objects we own? Is it the possessions we casually abuse and leave behind? I provide a formal medium for valuing and studying informal subjects — to pay homage to things we see everyday; toys we leave on the floor, dresses hanging in a closet, or trees growing beside dumpsters. I tend to work from the inside out, using photography as a way to get to know myself better. The satisfaction in all of this is seeing the progression from one body of work to another, a visual diary of my life, my worries, my fears, and hopes.”
